New online courses for travel professionals

Starting this fall, Luleå University of Technology will offer online courses for professionals in the tourism and hospitality industry, which have been hit hard by the current pandemic.

Starting fall 2020

The online courses will be produced and launched in the fall of 2020 via LTU Professional Education, the university’s organization for further training of professionals.
– The courses correspond to 1-3 higher education credits and about two weeks of study in a number of different subject areas such as economics, marketing, digitization and entrepreneurship. The courses will be open to participants from all over the country, says Viktoria Mattsson.

The Swedish government has decided on giving extra support for universities and colleges to strengthen distance education and offer more open network-based education in order to alleviate the corona virus’s impact on the labor market. Of the Swedish universities, Luleå University of Technology is awarded the largest sum of funds, totaling SEK 5 million, for the development of open network-based MOOC courses.

Offering MOOC courses is an important part of Luleå University of Technology’s goal of being the leading university in lifelong learning.

– By offering shorter, digital courses, Luleå University of Technology contributes to providing industry with cutting-edge expertise. As the courses are conducted entirely online, we can offer a knowledge and skills boost to people connected to the hotel, tourism and hotel industry across the country. With this initiative, we want to strengthen the industries, but also create an interest in the individuals for studies and show them that they can do this, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
