Shared Growth, Shared Responsibility: Norrbotten in Brussels

On 18 June 2025, Representatives from across the EU met in Brussels for the Smart Specialisation Community of Practice (S3CoP) Conference, to network and build partnerships to drive inter-regional innovation across borders. The goal: Increase “Made in EU” competitiveness, and ensure that all regions benefit from shared knowledge and collaboration.

Clear Communication to Create Real Impact

John Kostet from the regional development department of Norrbotten shared his reflections on the discussions taking place in Brussels:

“While gathering here, it is clear to us that we in Norrbotten have answers to many of the challenges facing Europe. However, w need to reach those who can truly benefit.”

His words underline one of the conference’s central messages – that innovation and regional strengths must be translated into accessible, real-world collaboration and impact.

Space,  a strategic strength for Europe – in Norrbotten

Among the priority areas for Norrbotten is space, where Lina Linde from LTU Business acts as S3 partnership lead.

“We see a growing interest in resilience and security. Space plays a crucial role here – especially for us in northern Sweden, where we have unique conditions to contribute,” says Linde.

With growing European attention on space technology, resilience, and data infrastructure, Norrbotten’s role as a hub for innovation and collaboration continues to expand. The challenge? To ensure more decision-makers on European level become aware of the infrastructure, research, test and development facilities that Norrbotten offers – unique on the European continent.

Driving Transformation Through Cooperation

The Norrbotten Regional Innovation Center supports this work by connecting regional strengths to European networks and helping translate research and innovation into sustainable growth. Showing up, contributing to the discussions and building new relationships with partners are key.
